About DCE

OUR HISTORY

Domasi College of Education (DCE) was established in response to a shortage of secondary school teachers in Malawi, which was identified in the early 1990s. Initially, Domasi Teachers’ Training College focused on training primary school teachers, but in 1993, it was upgraded to train secondary school teachers. It started by offering a two-year Diploma in Education, later expanded to a three-year program in 1997, including new departments such as Social Studies. Over the years, the College introduced new faculties, courses, and teaching methods, including open and distance learning (ODL) in 2000 with support from CIDA. It expanded further in 2008 by adding Agriculture Education with funding from the African Development Bank. In 2016, the College

transitioned from diploma programs to Bachelor’s Degrees in Secondary Education, establishing four faculties: Natural and Applied Science, Education, Language Arts and Communication, and Social Sciences. Currently, DCE has 19 academic departments, offers mature entry programs for diploma holders, and has a Centre for Distance and Continuing Education. Enrollment has grown to over 4,000 students. The College is located in Domasi, Zomba, covering 48 hectares, and features modern facilities, including administration blocks, hostels, laboratories, and demonstration schools. DCE operates under the Malawi Government and is affiliated with the University of Malawi. It enjoys some autonomy in academic matters and follows national higher education selection procedures. The College continuously reviews its curriculum to align with local and global education needs and emphasizes research in its programs
